FMP Development Diary Week 7

This week I started to plan out my e-book by creating wire frames and a design document.

Tuesday 

I created wire frames on paper to plan out the layout of my e-book. I created three wire frames; one for the first page and two for the normal page layout. The reason I done two for the normal page is because I am not to sure to create my e-book in a landscape or portrait, so I was experimenting on the look of the page.

Wednesday 

I started my design document by looking at colour of the logo I’m going to have, the colour of the font I’m going to use. I chose a bright red for the logo because the logo is going to look like a classified logo. The font colour is a black/dark grey, a similar colour to a pen or pencil. I also looked at page colour, which is a tea stained yellow. This is so it looks like a classified document. I also created digital wire frames to put into my design document as well.

Thursday 

I finished creating the digital wire frames. I created four digital wire frames, I did this so I can get a look at how the e-book looks on a digital format. There was two first pages wire frames because I wanted to see what the title will look like if there was a straight title or a curved title. I chose to create my e-book in landscape when I was creating the digital wire frames because it looks squashed together if I created the e-book in portrait. I also added technical specification, audience, pages/sections, fonts and navigation to the design document.

Friday

I created a prototype for my e-book to experiment on interactivity and how I could use it. I tried multi-state objects and button interaction. I should have tried video as well but I did not because I was not to sure how to implement into my e-book. I also finished my design document by creating moods on what I want my e-book to look like. I then started to look at pictures to use in my e-book.

I feel this was successful in what I planed out to do. I planed out to get my prototype and design document done this week and I did. But I feel I could have got more done if I did all my task one at a time and not split them up because I had to remember what I was doing.

FMP Development Diary Week 6

This week we started pre-production stages of our Final Major Project. The previous week I was advised to change my timeline to an e-book and instead of the doing the entirety of World War Two, do a single battle. So I chose to do the Battle of the Bulge.

Wednesday 

I researched the Battle of the Bulge because most of the my previous research of World War Two was lacking detail due to me originally going to give a brief explanation what the battle was when I was doing the timeline. I also found a documentary called Greatest Tank Battle on YouTube which had an episode on the Battle of the Bulge.

Thursday 

I did more research, this time on interactivity and design layouts. I found out information from a book called The Principles & Processes of Interactive Design by J Steane. The pages of book I used explains why balance, shape, space, size and scale are important. I also found a website that recommends good interactive websites.

Friday 

I continued to do research into interactivity and layout design by looking up multi page layouts. I also had a look at a couple of websites that are recommended on the website I found on Thursday. I found out by experimenting on these websites many ways you can use interactivity, for example the Now You See Me 2 website uses the scroll wheel to travel through the website. Also the website is just an interactive trailer for the movie.

Interactivity and design research

I feel that this week could have been more productive by doing more research into interactivity and layout because my research I have for the battle and Word War Two out weights the amount I have for interactivity and layout design. I also feel I could have started to plan out layout as I was doing the research as the knowledge is still fresh in my mind.

 

Final Major Project Research Task

For this task we had to research three things. The three things I researched was key turning points of World War Two, best way to layout information and useful ways to ways give out information. After we had to answer some question:

Focus Group and Final Ideas

For this task we got into groups and discussed our three ideas for our Final Major Project and give feedback to the other people in our groups about their ideas. The purpose of this task was to finalise my Finial Major Project with opinions of other people, so other people review my three ideas.

Feedback on Video idea:

The video was going to be a video about alternate history on if Germany won the Second World War. One bit of feedback I got was the idea has not got a lot of elements to it (quite simple). The video was simple because there was interactive elements to it. I was going to have a 2D drawing of a character that is like a narrator that tells the events and explains what happens. One suggest I got for this idea was use voice actors but I want to use my own voice. Another suggest is I could create a live action scene, this would be a good idea so people might be able to take in the information better if they can visualise it but that might take too much time to create. I do feel this idea is quite simple in the terms of interactivity but it could take a while to create though.

Text Based Adventure idea:

For this idea I was going to create a text based adventure story in a InDesign document. Each page will have different choices and scenarios that will lead you to a different page depending on the choices you make, so there will be multiple story branches. One problem that was pointed out with this idea was was it could get too complex and take a lot of time doing because where there are multiple story lines where the story could go. A pro for this task that I was given from feedback was it has the potential to have a lot of interactivity. I do feel out of my three ideas this was the weakest because I do not have a lot ideas with this project and I did not get a lot of feedback on this idea as well, so I do not know how to improve it either.

Interactive Timeline idea: 

I thought up this idea when I thought to combine the two previous ideas. I was going to create a interactive timeline on key events of during the Second World War. Some positive feedback was it would contain visuals and interactivity, so it will not be boring and easy to use. I said I was going to add videos into the interactive timeline so people do not have to read blocks of text and not get bored. The only problem with this is it will take a lot of time to complete and it could get complex having lots of pages to do. Another problem is it could take a lot of time to create with all the content like visual stuff like video and pictures. I do feel this is my strongest idea because I know a lot of knowledge of the Second World War and I enjoy learning history.

Final Idea:

From my feedback and suggestions I have chosen to do the Interactive timeline because the Second World War is a history subject that interests me and the other people in my focus group also suggested it as well. This task also will allow me to use multiple skills I learnt over the year. I can use skills in InDesign, Photoshop, Premier and audacity.

Action Plan:

  • Research key information and ways on producing it.
  • Plan layouts of the timeline.
  • Get useful images.
  • Write Scripts.
  • Record voice overs.
  • Create 2D character/narrator.

The Inspiration Behind My Idea

Who are they and what do they do?

An inspiration for my idea for my Final Major Project, which is going to be an interactive historical timeline, is a YouTube channel called vlogbrothers (vlogbrothers. (2007). vlogbrothers. The other channels that include SciShow (SciShow. (2011). SciShow presented by Hank Green and Michael Aranda. Available: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZYTClx2T1of7BRZ86-8fow. Last accessed 29th April 2016.) and CrashCourse (CrashCourse . (2006). CrashCourse presented by Hank Green,Adriene Hill and Jacob Clifford . Available: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX6b17PVsYBQ0ip5gyeme-Q. Last accessed 29th April 2016.). Vlogbrothers channel explain popular subjects like news events. CrashCourse is the channel that mainly create educational video series that explain science, politics and history.

While CrashCourse does have videos on science, they explain a large subject while the SciShow explains a certain subject.

What work have they produced? 

The vlogbrothers produced educational videos over three YouTube channels. Each video has no bad language and no violence, so each video is child friendly. I think the creators of the videos have school use in mind when creating the content. They also add a bit of comedy to their videos to make their videos more enjoyable, so people are not just sitting there taking in a lot of episodes. They also use animation by in their history videos to explain information that would be difficult to explain by using just words, so they make it easy to understand visually as well.

 

What makes their work interesting?

What makes CrashCourse interesting is they add a bit of humour to their videos so it is not boring. They also use animation to simplify the historical events to make it easy to understand.

Why is this person/company important?

CrashCourse is important because they create interesting videos and do not give out the information in blocks of text. I hope to do something similar in my Final Major Project, I hope to make the information I give out not boring and as interesting as theirs. I could also use their videos as research material to gather information for my project as well.

What do you think their inspirations were?

I think their inspirations were the high school teachers because at the end of their history videos the host always gives credit to his high school history teacher, who also helps him write scripts for the episodes. So their years of education could have inspired them to create their videos, maybe they thought they had something similar when they studied the subject of the video.

What techniques and skills do they use?

A technique and skill they use is they use animation created by another YouTube called Thought Cafe/Thought Bubble (https://www.youtube.com/user/ThoughtBubbler/featured). The purpose of the animation is to make some parts easy to understand when an detailed explanation is required, so they do not have to go in more detail and bore their audience. Another skill they use is comedic. They add some comedy into their videos to make them more interesting, for example in their history videos, they have a running gag when ever the Mongols are an exception. They also make their set look like a classroom, so this shows the purpose of the video is for educational purpose and their target audience is generally in education. The classroom set would probably make people feel more comfortable because most of the time when people learn new information and skills is in a classroom or some sort of learning environment.

How are they relevant to your project?

CrashCourse is relevant to my project because I hope to create a something similar to their videos, either a similar video or an educational application that gives out information in similar way they do. I can also use their videos as research material to gather information for my project.

What can you learn from them?

I can learn useful ways to give out information, either present via an animation or how to present the information with some comedic elements. I can also learn useful information from their videos to use in my project.

 

 

Legal and Ethical Do’s and Don’ts

Legal and Ethical Do’s and Don’ts is a task where I outline legal and ethical problems I will come across with my Final Major Project. The purpose is to know what rules I have to follow and what to avoid when constructing my Final Major Project. With my interactive timeline I need to make sure I follow legal procedures with my timeline because I am creating a product that has similar products like it. I have to make sure I am not making my timeline similar to any others in case I brake any copy right law. Also with this project, I’m doing a lot of research so I need to make sure I am not using any intellectual property like videos, images and content. Also health and safety is important as well since I am working in front of a computer for a while, so I need to take regular brakes. Also I need to make sure any and all wires are safely out of the way and not in the way of walk ways, so no one will trip over them. With healthy and safety issues you will also need to do risk assessments so I know what are the hazards and how to deal with them properly. I will also need to be careful of offending any ethnic groups because I am covering the Second World War in my Final Major Project and a lot of tragedy of the war was based on ethnicity. I will also need to Harvard Reference all the research I do, so the people or organisation I get information off of get credit for it.
