For this task we had to create a PowerPoint presentation about the Assassins Creed franchise and how the franchise and developer Ubisoft represents religion and gender.
The first slide talks about the representation of religion and race at Ubisoft and Assassins Creed. Assassins Creed uses many beliefs, mainly Christian because Ubisoft and the developers they own are mainly based in western Christian countries, so the stories in the games are based on western and Christian beliefs. For example 43% of Ubisoft’s employees are from North and South America. Also they have a disclaimer at the start of every Assassins Creed game apologising for anyone they offend anyone. A example of this is the main bad guy in Assassins Creed 2 and Brotherhood is the Pope.
The second slide is about the gender representation in Assassins Creed. The Assassins Creed franchise never had a important female role until Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag and even then the first main female character you meet is dressed up and pretending to be a man. Then when they released Assassins Creed Unity, Ubisoft had some controversy. The controversial subject was the game did not have a playable female character because Ubisoft stated it was to difficult to animate a female character. The latest Assassins Creed game, Syndicate, is the first main branch Assassins Creed game to have a playable female character.
The third slide is about gender at Ubisoft. A reason why Assassins Creed has hardly any important female roles is because 21% of Ubisoft work force is female.
The fourth and fifth slides state Ubisoft only recently started to released a new Assassins Creed game once a year to capitalise on the popularity of the franchise. Ubisoft also started to branch out into other mediums like books and side games like Assassins Creed Chronicles, which includes three game set in China, Russia and India.
The sixth slide states that the Assassins Creed brand has become one of the most recognisable brands in gaming.
After creating the PowerPoint, we had to present our findings to our class.
This task taught me how the video game industry is a male dominated industry. This task also taught me some things in how to present a PowerPoint. From this task I learnt that in a PowerPoint you should not have to much information on one slide and when speaking I should speak towards the audience, instead of facing the presentation or a computer screen.
